Indentured Servant Contract

Indentured servant - An indentured servant is a labourer under contract to work (for a specified amount of time) for another person or a company/corporation, often without any monetary pay, but in exchange for accommodation, food, other essentials, training, or passage to a new country. After working for the term of the contract (traditionally seven years) the servant was then free to farm or take up trade of his own.

Indenture - The term Indenture comes from the medieval English "indenture of retainer" — a contract written in duplicate on the same sheet, with the copies separated by cutting along a jagged (toothed, hence the term "indenture") line so that the teeth of the two parts could later be refitted to confirm authenticity. Collateral contract - A collateral contract is a contract where the consideration is the entry into another contract, and co-exists side by side with the main contract. For example, a collateral contract is formed when one party pays the other party a certain sum for entry into another contract.

Oral contract - An oral contract is a contract that terms of which have been agreed verbally, in contrast to a written contract, where the contract is a written document. There may be written, or other physical evidence, of an oral contract -- for example where the parties write down what they have agreed -- but the contract itself is not a written one.

Using a straightforward rational-choice approach, Professor Ramseyer explores the impact that law had on various markets in Japanese history indentured servant contract and the effect that those markets had on economic growth.
