Reinventing Water and Wastewater Systems: Global Lessons for Improving Water Management by Simon Hakim, X
A critical water science and technology and insightful look at the past, present, water science and technology and future state of water water science and technology and wastewater services In response to the worldwide water crisis foreseen by many experts, Reinventing Water water science and technology and Wastewater Systems presents practical solutions for making drinking water more affordable water science and technology and available, as well as strategies for improving water sanitation to satisfy the demands of a growing global population. Through extensive data water science and technology and case histories, this book demonstrates the potential success of privatizing water delivery water science and technology and wastewater treatment facilities. In addition, it provides examples of state-of-the-art techniques for achieving higher efficiencies in water infrastructure facilities through reengineering, improved technologies, water science and technology and quality benchmarking. Contributed chapters are provided by leading global engineers water science and technology and economists from such companies as the World Bank, Stone water science and technology and Weber Consultants, the Atlantis Water Fund, water science and technology and the Anglian Water Company. Coverage by these experts includes exploring regulatory frameworks, financing the water water science and technology and wastewater infrastructure, reinventing public sector operations, analyzing the past water science and technology and future of the global water industry, water science and technology and examining the restructuring operations in selected U.S. cities. Reinventing Water water science and technology and Wastewater Systems: Global Lessons for Improving Water Management is a constructive volume for civil engineers working in water water science and technology and wastewater treatment, urban water science and technology and regional planners, water science and technology and environmental engineers, as well as government administrators overseeing infrastructure water science and technology and water systems water science and technology and financial institutions involved with underwriting major water improvement projects.

Ethics in an Age of Technology: Gifford Lectures by Ian G. Barbour,

Ethics in an Age of Technology: Gifford Lectures by Ian G. Barbour,
The Gifford Lectures have challenged our greatest thinkers to relate the worlds of religion, philosophy, water science and technology and science. Now Ian Barbour has joined ranks with such Gifford lecturers as William James, Carl Jung, water science and technology and Reinhold Neibuhr. In 1989 Barbour presented his first series of Gifford Lectures, published as Religion in an Age of Science, in which he explored the challenges to religion brought by the methods water science and technology and theories of contemporary science. In 1990, he returned to Scotland to present this second series, dealing with ethical issues arising from technology water science and technology and exploring the relationship of human water science and technology and environmental values to science, philosophy, water science and technology and religion water science and technology and showing why these values are relevant to technological policy decisions. "Modern technology has brought increased food production, improved health, higher living standards, water science and technology and better communications," writes Barbour. "But its environmental water science and technology and human costs have been increasingly evident." Most of the destructive impacts, Barbour points out, come not from dramatic accidents but from the normal operation of agricultural water science and technology and industrial systems, which deplete resources water science and technology and pollute air, water, water science and technology and land. Other technologies have unprecedented power to affect people water science and technology and other forms of life distant in time water science and technology and space (through global warming water science and technology and genetic engineering, for example). Large-scale technologies are also expensive water science and technology and centralized, accelerating the concentration of economic water science and technology and political power water science and technology and widening the gaps between rich water science and technology and poor nations. In examining the conflicting ethics water science and technology and assumptions that lead to divergent views of technology, Barbour analyzes three social values: justice, participatory freedom, water science and technology and economic development, water science and technology and defends such environmental principles as resource sustainability, environmental protection, water science and technology and respect for all forms of life. He presents case studies of agricultural technology, energy policy, water science and technology and the use of computers.
